Graduate English Organization (GEO) Annual PEAKS Conference: "Impressionism"
March 2nd, 2024
In a world where identities are constantly in flux, shaped by forces both personal and global, the Impressionist movement of the 19th century offers a unique lens through which to examine the lived experience of change. In the wake of current events, from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to the ever-shifting political landscape of Palestine, we invite you to consider the ways in which Impressionism's emphasis on subjective experience and fleeting moments resonates with the individual and collective struggle for self-definition in an increasingly uncertain world.
This conference seeks to explore the intersection between Impressionism in literature and the lived experience of identities being reshaped by contemporary political, social, and environmental realities. We welcome papers that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- The use of Impressionist techniques to capture the fragmented and disoriented realities of war, displacement, and political upheaval.
- Examining the role of memory and personal narrative in constructing and reconstructing identities in the face of ongoing conflict and change.
- Exploring how the fleeting nature of sensory experience intersects with the fluidity of identity in a globalized world.
- Analyzing the ways in which marginalized communities utilize Impressionist aesthetics to challenge dominant narratives and reclaim agency over their own stories.
- Investigating the impact of technology and digital media on the formation and expression of individual and collective identities in the 21st century.
